In many cities and towns around the world bicycles are a primary form of transportation. The variety of these commuters is almost infinite. I enjoy watching them zoom by, it’s like people watching on wheels. This piece is not intended to capture reality but the motion and variety of bicycle commuters.
My focus for this piece is not the overall environment of the commuters but the riders themselves, therefore I have removed all objects from the background.
Images are mounted on layered maple squares to separate them physically, the maple also brings a common element to the entire piece. I brought tighter focus to the riders by cropping to irregular shapes that cut into the subjects.
I offer Gilcée prints of my photographs, compositions and multimedia works at smaller sizes than my original works. All are printed with Pigmented inks on high quality Moab Entrada rag paper.
Hi, I'm Chuck Downs, thanks for visiting my website.
I create art with photographs and layers of color. I apply the color to the photographs by hand using techniques I have developed over many years. See more on my process.
My wall sculptures came about while thinking about photographs differently than I have in the past. As a result of experimenting with layering photographs I wanted to create physical separation for each image. As a result the works have taken on a sculptural aspect that compliments the photographs
